James and John request prominence

Bible 1
Jesus and His followers were on the way to Jerusalem but many were afraid. So Jesus took the 12 disciples to one side to explain what was about to happen. – Slide 1
Bible 2
‘We are going to Jerusalem,’ Jesus said. ‘I will be betrayed to the leading priests and teachers of the law who will say that I must die. They will hand me over to the Gentiles to mock, spit, mistreat and kill me. But on the third day after my death, I will rise to life again.’
Bible 3
The disciples listened but did not grasp what Jesus was saying.

Bible 4
James and John came to Jesus. ‘Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask,’ they insisted. ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ Jesus asked.
Bible 5
‘You will have glory in your kingdom,’ they said. ‘Let one of us sit at your right, and the other at your left, in the places of greatest honour.’
Bible 6
‘You don’t know what you are asking!’Jesus replied.‘Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptised with the baptism of suffering?’

Bible 7
‘Yes we are,’ they insisted. ‘Then you will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptised with my baptism of suffering, Jesus told them. ‘But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones He has chosen.’
Bible 8
When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were furious.
Bible 9
So Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.

Bible 10
‘But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first among you must be last.
Bible 11
‘For I didn’t come to be served but to serve others and to give My life as a ransom for many.’
